Hippo ivory is great for scrimshaw, knife handles and carving. Hippopotamus are dangerous animals and a serious problem in many parts of Africa, and account for more human deaths per year than crocodiles and poisonous snakes combined. Because of this populations are frequently thinned out through government culling operations. The meat, hides, and ivory are all kept and utilized, the hippo ivory we sell comes from Tanzanian government sanctioned culling operations.
Contrary to popular belief hippo tusks are ivory and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some have a tough enamel which is so hard it will spark on a bandsaw blade and ruin it in seconds. We can polish a window on any of these for scrimshaw or display.
