Description
Steller's Sea Cow Rib Bone pre 1772 from the extinct mammal. This is the densest marine mammal rib bone and is favored by knife makers, pen makers, carvers and hook makers. It can be filled with CA glue or thin epoxy or stabilized to increase the density.
Approximate butt diameters are 1 3/4" x 14" long with very nice color. Excavated from ancient Yupik Eskimo villages Kukuluk (coo coo' look) and traditional hunting camp sites (dating up to 6,000 years old) on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. Steller's Sea Cow were “discovered” by Georg Steller in 1741 in the Bering Sea and were extinct by the 1770's.
